Sierra Leone Initiates First Prosecution Under Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2024

In a landmark legal development, four men appeared before Hon. Justice Mark Ngegba at the Freetown High Court, marking the first prosecution under the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2024. 

The Office of the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice has charged Sayo Marrah, Lansana Qura, Salieu Kamara, and Abu Bakarr Kamara with violating Sections 2, 3, and 10 of the Act.

The indictment alleges that Sayo Marrah unlawfully contracted a marriage with a minor, while the child's father, Salieu Kamara, is accused of consenting to and participating in the ceremony. 

Co-defendants Lansana Qura and Abu Bakarr Kamara allegedly facilitated the organization and execution of the marriage.

Representing the State, J.A.K. Sesay underscored the case as a pivotal milestone in Sierra Leone's commitment to child protection. 

Although the defendants remained unrepresented during the initial hearing, Justice Ngegba ordered their remand and scheduled subsequent proceedings for July 2, 2026.
