The Office of National Security (ONS) has announced the initiation of preliminary inquiries regarding reports of a cocaine seizure conducted by Spanish authorities. The investigation pertains to a vessel that reportedly departed Freetown on April 22, 2026, and was subsequently intercepted while navigating toward the Mediterranean.

In an official release issued on May 7, 2026, the Security Sector clarified that neither the Sierra Leone Ports and Harbours Authority nor the Sierra Leone Police have received formal communication from Spanish officials concerning the seizure.

Despite the lack of official notification, the statement confirmed that comprehensive inter-agency assessments and preliminary investigations are currently underway to verify the vessel's voyage history and port activities.

The Security Sector emphasized that the matter is being addressed with the highest level of professionalism and seriousness.

Furthermore, the authorities reaffirmed Sierra Leone’s steadfast commitment to collaborating with international partners to combat transnational organized crime and uphold global security standards.
