- U.S.-Sierra Leone Partnership Powers National Development Strategy
U.S.-Sierra Leone Partnership Powers National Development Strategy Vice President Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh recently underscored the robust and enduring partnership between the Republic of Sierra Leone and the United States of America. This statement was delivered during the "Freedom 250" commemorative event in Freetown, celebrating the 250th anniversary of American independence. The proceedings, convened by the Millennium Challenge Account Sierra Leone, served as a forum for diplomats, senior government officials, and strategic development partners to recognize the historical and ongoing cooperation between the two sovereign nations. In his address, Vice President Jalloh characterized the bilateral relationship as one predicated on a shared commitment to sustainable development, economic opportunity, and the advancement of democratic institutions. He further articulated that the provision of reliable and cost-effective energy is a cornerstone of Sierra Leone's national development strategy. Such infrastructure is vital for stimulating industrialization, facilitating job creation, and enhancing the socioeconomic welfare of the citizenry. The Vice President extended formal commendations to the United States government, the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC), and allied development partners for their technical and financial contributions toward the transformation of Sierra Leone's energy sector. Robinson-Morgan emphasized the strategic significance of the $480 million MCC Compact. This initiative is projected to significantly broaden electricity access, directly benefiting approximately 4.6 million Sierra Leoneans. They further noted that this substantial investment is designed to enhance the stability of the national power grid, improve service reliability, and foster a conducive environment for private sector investment. The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Alhaji Musa Timothy Kabba, affirmed that the partnership reflects a mutual adherence to democratic principles and a collaborative dedication to sustainable growth. The "Freedom 250" observance concluded by highlighting the escalating cooperation between the two nations, with a renewed focus on energy infrastructure and economic investment as the primary drivers of future prosperity.
- HRDN-SL Demands Full Transparency on US Deportee Repatriation Deal
HRDN-SL Demands Full Transparency on US Deportee Repatriation Deal The Human Rights Defenders Network Sierra Leone (HRDN-SL) has formally requested that the Government of Sierra Leone provide full transparency regarding the bilateral agreement with the United States concerning the reception of West African deportees. In an official communication, the network expressed significant concerns regarding the arrangement, emphasizing the potential for human rights violations against vulnerable individuals in the absence of robust regulatory frameworks and oversight. HRDN-SL maintains that the current policy prompts critical inquiries concerning adherence to international human rights statutes, refugee protection protocols, and regional African human rights mandates. The organization cautioned that without established legal safeguards and accountability mechanisms, repatriated individuals may be subject to arbitrary detention or the dissolution of family units. Furthermore, the group highlighted the risk of statelessness, noting that legal ambiguities could impede individuals from attaining protection or returning to their respective countries of origin. Reports indicate that Sierra Leone has committed to receiving approximately 300 West African deportees per annum, supported by a $1.5 million USD allocation from the United States for operational and humanitarian expenditures. HRDN-SL observed that there is a lack of administrative clarity regarding the legal standing of these individuals and the specific mechanisms governing their protection while in Sierra Leone. The network underscored that as a signatory to ECOWAS, African Union, and United Nations treaties, Sierra Leone is obligated to uphold all domestic and international human rights standards. Authorities are urged to ensure that no individual is subjected to unlawful detention or returned to a jurisdiction where they may face persecution or physical harm. Concluding its statement, HRDN-SL called for enhanced accountability, asserting that all migration-related agreements must be made public to verify their alignment with Sierra Leone’s legal and humanitarian obligations.
- SLFA Unveils US$250,000 Pavilion Project at Academy Field
The long-standing criticism of Sierra Leone football has often extended beyond on-field performances to the lack of sustainable infrastructure capable of supporting long-term development. Issues ranging from poor spectator facilities and inadequate training environments to limited grassroots investment have continued to challenge the country’s football ecosystem, despite the abundance of talent. Against this backdrop, Friday’s groundbreaking ceremony at the SLFA Academy Field marked a significant milestone, signalling what stakeholders describe as a renewed push toward football infrastructure development in Sierra Leone. In front of football administrators, government officials, and other stakeholders, Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA) President Babadi Kamara officially commissioned the construction of a new 435-seater pavilion valued at over US$250,000. The project is being privately funded by the SLFA President as part of a broader infrastructure development drive within the association. The proposed facility is expected to improve spectator safety, comfort, and the overall matchday experience at the SLFA Academy Field, a venue increasingly central to youth football development and domestic competitions. Within football circles, however, the project is also being viewed as part of a wider effort to reshape the legacy of football administration through visible infrastructure development. For decades, discussions on football development in Sierra Leone have largely focused on league management, funding constraints, selection controversies, and national team performance. Meanwhile, infrastructure development has lagged behind, with many clubs and academies still operating under limited facilities, poor maintenance systems, and inadequate spectator accommodations. Analysts say this gap has affected not only player development but also the commercial growth and professional image of domestic football. “This is the kind of investment Sierra Leone football has needed for years,” one local football analyst noted during the ceremony. “Talent alone cannot grow the game. Football develops through systems, facilities, and long-term planning.” The event was attended by senior government and sports officials, including Parliamentary Sports Committee Chairperson Rachel Pessima, NSA Executive Director Mohamed Alphaka Conteh, and Minister of Sports Augusta James Teima. Speaking at the ceremony, Mohamed Alphaka Conteh commended the SLFA leadership for what he described as a practical commitment to football development. He said the new pavilion would significantly enhance the image and functionality of the Academy Field as an emerging sporting venue. Minister of Sports Augusta James Teima, in her remarks, encouraged other sporting disciplines to emulate football’s current infrastructure development efforts. “I want other sporting disciplines in Sierra Leone to emulate and learn from the development the Football Association is driving,” she said. “It is only through collaboration that we can make the game better and more accessible.” SLFA President Babadi Kamara also disclosed that the pavilion project forms part of a wider institutional transformation agenda. He revealed that the association has secured a new headquarters, expected to be officially opened in October, while FIFA has approved the construction of two additional pitches at Albert Academy School and The Bo School under the FIFA Arena Project. The school-based pitch initiative is expected to strengthen grassroots football development, which experts have long identified as a key weakness in Sierra Leone’s football structure due to inadequate playing facilities and limited structured investment. “These developments will bring dignity and respect to the SLFA among our regional member associations,” Kamara stated. Despite the optimism surrounding the projects, football observers caution that infrastructure alone will not transform Sierra Leone football. They emphasise the importance of sustainability, transparency, maintenance culture, and structured youth development systems in ensuring long-term impact. Sierra Leone football has experienced previous moments of optimism that failed to translate into lasting reform due to administrative instability and inconsistent planning. However, the current developments are beginning to shift the narrative from administrative challenges toward visible infrastructure progress. For many supporters, the sight of construction beginning at Kingtom represents a rare and tangible sign of advancement in a football system long accustomed to promises over delivery. Whether these initiatives mark a defining transformation or another missed opportunity will ultimately depend on how effectively they are sustained and integrated into the broader football development framework.

- SLP Calls for Investigation Into Alleged Illegal Acquisition of Jui Barracks Land
The Sierra Leone Police (SLP) has called for a thorough investigation into allegations of illegal land acquisition involving portions of the Jui Barracks, which are reportedly being claimed by individuals and groups as private property. According to the Police, the issue came to light after two religious organisations Faith Healing Bible Church and Ebadul Rahman Mosque approached authorities at Jui Barracks seeking permission to conduct religious services in an open area within the military installation. The Police stated that permission was granted strictly for temporary worship activities and not for any form of permanent occupation or development. However, the SLP alleges that the two groups, in collaboration with certain individuals and officials within the Ministry of Lands, subsequently obtained documents in March 2023 that purportedly confer ownership rights over portions of the land. The Police maintain that the land in question forms part of the official Jui Barracks property, designated for police housing and related facilities. The Police have strongly emphasised that the area is not available for private ownership or the construction of permanent religious structures. They have also called for the investigation to be extended to include any government officials or individuals who may have facilitated or conspired in the issuance of documents relating to the disputed land. Furthermore, the SLP is urging the Ministry of Lands to take appropriate action upon the conclusion of the investigation, including the possible revocation or cancellation of any documents issued in relation to the contested land. The Police reaffirmed their commitment to protecting state property and ensuring that all land designated for security installations remains secure and properly utilised.
