Middlesbrough and Sierra Leonean football fans have suffered a disappointing blow as the club confirmed that defender Alex Bangura has sustained a fresh muscle injury. The 26-year-old, who had recently returned to first-team action following a lengthy absence, now faces another period on the sidelines.
The injury occurred during Middlesbrough’s emphatic 4-0 victory over Southampton at the Riverside Stadium on 4 January 2026. Bangura, who started the match, was forced off the pitch just three minutes in, visibly frustrated as his afternoon ended prematurely.
Following medical assessments, Middlesbrough head coach Kim Hellberg revealed that Bangura is expected to be sidelined for 4 to 5 weeks, ruling him out for the remainder of January and much of February.
This latest setback is particularly difficult for Bangura, who missed nearly two years of football due to a severe Achilles injury. He had made a triumphant return in December 2025, earning Man of the Match honors in a victory over Derby County.
Bangura’s absence presents a defensive challenge for Hellberg as Middlesbrough continues its campaign in the EFL Championship. The Sierra Leone international’s pace and versatility on the left flank have been key assets, and his repeated injuries have tested both player and club.
