Dr. Alhaji K. Tarawally, an emerging politician and former media professional, has announced his resignation from the National Grand Coalition (NGC), a party he helped establish. His decision stems from a belief that the NGC has become a "puppet" of the ruling Sierra Leone People's Party (SLPP).
In a statement issued on June 22nd, Dr. Tarawally reflected on his initial vision and ambition to be part of a political movement that would break away from the longstanding dominance of the All People's Congress and the Sierra Leone People's Party, aiming to become a transformative force for the citizens.
He noted that while some members of the NGC advocate for restructuring the party into a credible opposition that holds the government accountable, others are focused on personal benefits by maintaining the alliance with the SLPP.
These conflicting perspectives have compromised the party's ideals and its intended representation.
According to Dr. Tarawally, this has undermined the NGC's independence and muted its advocacy for change, effectively making it complicit in the very system it once pledged to challenge.
Dr. Tarawally stresses that his decision is based on principle, prioritizing the welfare of Sierra Leone over personal ambition, and rejecting the prevailing political environment characterized by corruption, poor governance, and inadequate basic services.
He asserts his commitment to act in the interest of the nation's suffering populace, rather than pursuing political appointments.
