President Julius Maada Bio has issued a directive mandating the immediate removal of all unauthorized structures within the boundaries of the Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary. This measure serves to uphold the environmental integrity and cultural significance of the protected area.
The order was promulgated following an official inspection of national historic and tourism landmarks on Thursday and was disclosed on a livestream of the visitation which revealed encroachments into and depletion of the surrounding forest.
During the site assessment, the President observed significant unauthorized development posing a direct threat to the sanctuary's conservation efforts. Tacugama is recognized internationally for its vital role in the protection of endangered chimpanzees and the promotion of sustainable eco-tourism.
President Bio reaffirmed the administration's position on environmental stewardship, stating that actions compromising natural resources or designated conservation zones will not be permitted.
This directive reflects a broader governmental commitment to the enforcement of environmental regulations and the preservation of Sierra Leone's biodiversity for future generations.
Authorities have been instructed to execute the demolition order with immediate effect. This enforcement action is intended to signal a rigorous approach toward zoning violations and to ensure the restoration of the sanctuary's ecological boundaries.
