A coalition of civil society and human rights organizations has formally expressed support for Sierra Leone’s newly appointed Chief Electoral Commissioner, Edmond Sylvester Alpha, during a meeting held on March 16, 2026.
The engagement, which took place at the Media Room of the Electoral Commission, brought together representatives from various civil society groups, members of the public, and media practitioners. The gathering served as both a congratulatory event and a platform to reaffirm collaboration between electoral authorities and civic actors.
Mr. Alpha was recently appointed by President Julius Maada Bio, with his nomination receiving approval from Parliament, paving the way for him to assume leadership of the country’s electoral body at a critical time for democratic governance.
As part of the event, the coalition presented the Chief Electoral Commissioner with a personalized commemorative photograph, symbolizing their endorsement and willingness to work alongside the Commission in strengthening electoral processes.
Responding to the gesture, Mr. Alpha expressed appreciation to the coalition, describing the recognition as unexpected but deeply meaningful. He commended civil society groups for their continued role in promoting accountability and democratic participation.
He reiterated his commitment to fostering strong partnerships with civil society organizations to ensure that future elections in Sierra Leone are conducted in a credible, transparent, and peaceful manner.
The Chief Electoral Commissioner also assured political stakeholders of inclusivity, emphasizing that the Commission under his leadership would maintain neutrality and fairness. He noted that all registered political parties would be given equal opportunities to participate in the electoral process.
Highlighting his leadership approach, Mr. Alpha stated that his office would operate an open-door policy, encouraging engagement and dialogue with all relevant stakeholders as part of efforts to build public trust in the country’s electoral system.
