A tragic case was heard in the Pademba Road Court No. 2, where Hawanatu Hawa Koroma, 27, was charged with the murder of her husband, Nabieu Bangura.

The prosecution's case, presented by DSP Sorie Conteh, included testimony from Saidu Bangura, the deceased's brother, who shared distressing details of the incident that occurred on November 22, 2024, at their home in Hill Station, Freetown.

Saidu testified that he received a disturbing call while in Kamakwei, informing him that his brother had been burned. Upon arriving at Connaught Hospital, he spoke with Nabieu, who alleged that Hawanatu had set him on fire after a disagreement regarding the possibility of infidelity.

According to Saidu, Nabieu denied any disputes prior to the attack.

Saidu recounted that after returning home from work, Nabieu went to sleep in the shop to avoid conflict. While he was asleep, Hawanatu reportedly poured a flammable substance on him, ignited it with a match, and then locked the door before he could escape.

Neighbors were able to break in and rescue him, but he suffered severe burns—documented as 90% of his body—leading to his death after a week in the hospital.

Furthermore, Saidu confirmed that he witnessed the postmortem examination and that photographic evidence of Nabieu's condition was presented in court.

The accused, unrepresented in court, opted not to question Saidu during his testimony.

The hearing was adjourned to January 28, 2025, while Hawanatu remains in custody. This incident highlights the serious realities of domestic violence and the tragic outcomes that can result from such situations.
