Decomposed Body of Unidentified Person Discovered in Tongo Field Swamp

Police in Tongo Field, Eastern Sierra Leone, have launched an investigation after the decomposed body of an unidentified person was discovered in a swamp at Palima Section.

According to police reports, the incident occurred on Sunday, 2nd August 2026, when Mr. Augustine Junisa, a Laboratory Technician based in Tongo Field, reported at the Tongo Police Station around 8:00 a.m. He was accompanied by Chief Brima Amara Dugba of Palima Section.

Mr. Junisa told police that earlier that morning, at about 7:00 a.m., he had gone to his Short Bar Swamp in Palima Section to carry out routine work when he discovered the decomposed body of an unidentified person lying in the area.

Following the report, a police team comprising the Scene of Crime Officer (SOCO), PC 14427 Kolungbonda A., and CRO/Information Officer SI Mohamed Kargbo, alongside Mr. Junisa and Chief Dugba, proceeded to the scene using two motorbikes.

On their way, the team stopped at Marlin Health Center, Tongo Field, where the matter was reported to the Nurse-in-Charge, Madam Emma, who assigned a medical officer to accompany them for professional examination of the body.

Upon arrival at the scene, the corpse was found in an advanced state of decomposition, with visible signs of decay, including the presence of flies and maggots. Due to the condition of the body, the identity of the deceased could not be established.

Police personnel photographed the scene and the remains in the presence of the medical officer, while all required procedures were followed. After examination, the medical officer authorised the release of the body to local authorities, who ensured that it was buried in a properly identified grave.

Police have confirmed that investigations into the circumstances surrounding the discovery and the identity of the deceased are ongoing.
