Driver Remanded Over Unlawful Cannabis Possession and Transport

High Court Justice Adrian Fisher has ordered driver Samuel Turay remanded at Freetown's Male Correctional Facility following charges related to illegal drug possession and transportation.

Turay faces two counts under the National Drugs Control Act 2008: unlawful possession of cannabis sativa (Section 8(a)) and transporting prohibited drugs (Section 7(b)).

Court documents state that officers intercepted Turay on June 9, 2026, at the Mile 38 police checkpoint in Sierra Leone's North West Region. Authorities discovered 600.9 grams of loose cannabis sativa in his possession without legal authorization, which subsequently tested positive for tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).

The prosecution further alleges that Turay knowingly transported the illicit substance from 55 Junction Waterloo to the Mile 38 checkpoint in Port Loko District.

Turay entered a plea of not guilty to both charges. Lead prosecutor A. Jalloh Esq. requested a brief adjournment to bring forward state witnesses.

Denying bail, Justice Fisher ordered Turay held in custody pending trial. Proceedings are scheduled to resume on October 12, 2026.
