The Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources, Princess Dugba, has expressed appreciation to President Julius Maada Bio for bringing the Civic Day Series engagement to Pujehun District, describing the initiative as an important platform for direct interaction between government and citizens.
Delivering her keynote address at the latest edition of the series, Minister Dugba said she was pleased to finally participate in the programme, noting that previous invitations had been missed due to pressing national duties. She commended the gathering, stressing the importance of sustained community engagement in governance.
Reflecting on her two-year tenure in office, the Minister stated that her primary objective has been to enhance revenue generation for government through the fisheries sector. She explained that this has been achieved through a combination of strengthened regulatory enforcement and improved compliance measures.
According to her, the Ministry has implemented a strict system of closed and open fishing seasons designed to protect marine resources. She noted that the temporary suspension of fishing activities allows marine life to regenerate naturally, ensuring the long-term sustainability of the country’s aquatic resources.
To address tax evasion and illegal fishing practices, Minister Dugba said the Ministry has intensified enforcement actions against non-compliant vessel owners, particularly those attempting to operate during closed seasons. She added that enforcement officers are deployed at major fishing ports when the season reopens to ensure that all boat owners settle outstanding dues before departing to sea.
In her closing remarks, the Minister encouraged young people in attendance to take a keen interest in governance and national development processes. She urged them to stay informed about government activities and develop an understanding of public administration.
She emphasized that early civic awareness would better equip the next generation to take on leadership roles and contribute meaningfully to the country’s future development.
