In Memoriam: Legendary Footballer Lamin Bangura


Sierra Leonean football icon Lamin Bangura was laid to rest with dignity and reverence at the Kissy Road Cemetery on a somber day.


Bangura, a stalwart central defender who represented the Leone Stars with distinction in the 1994 and 1996 Africa Cup of Nations tournaments, passed away on March 26th at the age of 59.



A Multifaceted Footballing Career


Bangura's illustrious footballing career encompassed both playing and coaching roles.


He adorned the green, white, and blue of Sierra Leone with pride and later served as a valued member of the technical crew for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.


As a coach, Bangura demonstrated exceptional leadership, guiding Ports Authority FC and the Sierra Leone U-23 national team with skill and dedication.



A notable achievement during his coaching tenure was steering Diamond Stars to triumph in the 2013/2014 Sierra Leone Premier League, a testament to his tactical acumen.


His coaching prowess also extended beyond Sierra Leone, as he achieved notable success with AS Kaloum in neighboring Guinea.



A Solemn Farewell


A solemn and respectful ceremony was held to honor Bangura's memory, co-organized by his family, Ports Authority FC, and the Sierra Leone Football Association.


A memorial service was reverently held at the Sierra Leone Football Association Academy, followed by a Muslim prayer at the Temne Central Mosque at Old Field Street in Freetown.

Bangura's enduring legacy is characterized by his unwavering determination, resilience, and profound impact on Sierra Leonean football.


Numerous mourners, including devoted fans, football administrators, past and present footballers (male and female), and former teammates, paid their respects and shared their heartfelt tributes, celebrating his remarkable career.


Lamin Bangura's unwavering commitment, inspiring leadership, and exceptional talent have secured his place as a true giant of African football.
