IT Specialist Remanded in Freetown Over Cybercrime Charges

Joseph Ellie Cooper, a 28-year-old IT specialist, has been remanded to the male correctional facility in Freetown following his appearance before Pademba Road Court No. 1 on multiple cybercrime charges.

Magistrate Mustapha Brima Jah ordered Cooper's remand after three counts were levied under the Cyber Security and Crime Act 2021, including unauthorized access to a computer system, accessing a protected system, and data interference. 

The alleged offense occurred on May 25, 2026, targeting a system belonging to Aminata Dumbuya.

During the committal proceedings, Cooper was not required to enter a plea. 

Lead prosecutor Deputy Superintendent of Police Eric A. Deen confirmed that case files and inquiry documents had been served to the defense team.

Defense counsel S.S. Bangura requested bail pursuant to Section 76(1)(c) of the Criminal Procedure Act 2024, arguing that Cooper is not a flight risk, has reliable sureties, and serves as his family's primary breadwinner. 

Bangura also signaled plans to cross-examine prosecution witnesses.

Citing the severity of the alleged offenses, Magistrate Jah denied bail. The matter was adjourned to August 17, 2026.
