Kenema Bike Riders Union Demands Inquiry Following Violent Altercation in Blama

The Kenema District executive of the Sierra Leone Commercial Bike Riders Union has called for a formal investigation following a violent incident involving a local rider and law enforcement officials in Blama Town, Small Bo Chiefdom.

The incident, which occurred on July 8, 2026, during a reported police drug raid, left Mr. Sheku Lahai, a local bike rider, with a severe injury. According to a press release issued by the Union on July 9, 2026, Mr. Lahai sustained the injury after an officer allegedly bit his finger, resulting in its loss.

In the statement, the Union strongly condemned the conduct of the officers involved, describing their actions as unprofessional and a departure from the standards expected of law enforcement. While the organization reiterated its support for the rule of law and efforts to address the illegal drug trade, it emphasized that such operations must be conducted with respect for human rights and citizen dignity.

The Union is now calling upon relevant authorities to conduct a transparent, impartial investigation into the matter to ensure accountability.

Despite the severity of the incident, the Union leadership expressed appreciation to the local authorities—including the Officer in Charge of the Sierra Police, the Local Unit Commander of Kenema, and members of the Blama and District Bike Riders Union leadership—for their swift intervention. Their efforts were credited with preventing the situation from escalating and restoring calm within the community.

The Union reaffirmed its dedication to promoting peace and cooperation between commercial bike riders and security forces, urging all parties to prioritize dialogue and lawful conflict resolution.
