During the weekly press conference held by the Ministry of Information and Civic Education, Abdulai Caulker, the National Security Coordinator from the Office of National Security (ONS), provided an update on the security status of Sierra Leone. He indicated that, according to their evaluation, the country's security remains stable. He clarified that security threat assessments are categorized into three levels, with the current status being level one, which signifies a normal situation.
Caulker also mentioned that following the incident on November 26th of the previous year, the government, in partnership with the ONS, has reviewed, assessed, and enhanced the security sector and its operations. He emphasized that the security framework has been decentralized to the district level, where regular monthly meetings are conducted to bolster security measures. These committees consist of representatives from various stakeholders, including Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), the police, paramount chiefs, and youth leaders, to ensure comprehensive security coverage nationwide.
Regarding the ongoing Yanga-Guinea border dispute, Caulker informed the press that previous leaders have faced challenges in reaching a resolution. However, President Maada Bio has taken proactive measures by sending a technical delegation to negotiate a peaceful and amicable agreement to resolve the conflict.
In conclusion, Caulker announced the cancellation of the traditional Floating Lantern Parade this year. He explained that the decision was made due to security concerns, as the government continues its efforts to apprehend fugitives from the failed coup attempt on November 26th. Authorities are concerned that such gatherings could provide an opportunity for fugitives to escape or incite unrest.
