Diamond Stars FC recorded a hard-fought 1-0 victory against Luawa FC in Week 22 of the Leone Rock Premier League, with substitute Sylvernus Momodu emerging as the match-winner.
The decisive moment came in the 89th minute when Momodu, wearing jersey No. 9, capitalized on a well-delivered pass from No. 4 Ourie Bah to break the deadlock and hand Diamond Stars all three points at the Koidu Community Football Field on Sunday.
The encounter was fiercely contested, with both sides struggling to assert dominance, particularly after a temporary halt in the first half due to heavy rainfall. Despite creating chances under challenging conditions, neither team managed to score until the closing stages of the match.
Disciplinary actions featured prominently, with a total of five yellow cards issued. Diamond Stars had two players cautioned Abubakarr Fornah (31st minute) and Musa Samura (62nd minute). Luawa FC recorded three bookings through Amadu Diallo (29th minute), Prince Rogers (40th minute), and Alhaji S. Conteh (90th minute). No red cards were issued.
Momodu’s late heroics not only secured a vital victory for Diamond Stars but also earned him the Man of the Match award.
The win marks Diamond Stars’ first victory since the start of the second leg of the season, boosting their tally to 21 points from 22 matches, comprising five wins, six draws, and eleven defeats. Luawa FC trails closely behind with 20 points from the same number of matches, having registered four wins, eight draws, and ten losses.
The match was officiated by Central Referee Alhaji Musa Kabia, assisted by Mamoud Alie Conteh and Edward Chernor Musa, who ensured smooth control of proceedings despite the adverse weather conditions.
Fans of Diamond Stars celebrated the narrow victory, expressing optimism for improved performances, particularly in home fixtures. Meanwhile, supporters of Luawa FC were left disappointed by the result.
Diamond Stars will aim to build on this momentum as the season progresses, while Luawa FC looks to regroup and bounce back in their upcoming matches.
