A woman has told a Freetown court that a motorbike rider allegedly disappeared after she lent him a motorcycle for commercial use.

Alice Sawyer, a trader, testified as the first prosecution witness in the case against 30-year-old Maada Joseph George, who is facing a charge of fraudulent conversion.

Sawyer told Pademba Road Court No. 6 that she knew George from their neighbourhood. She said her husband had bought her a blue-and-yellow Bajaj motorcycle, registration number AZR 815, which George later requested to use for commercial riding.

She testified that she agreed to his request, but after taking the motorcycle, George allegedly disappeared and could not be traced.

Sawyer further told the court that she saw George again on 31 May 2026 before reporting the matter to New England Ville Police Station, where she made a statement. George was reportedly arrested in October 2026.

According to the charge sheet, between 1 and 31 May 2026, at Hennessan Street in New England Ville, George allegedly fraudulently converted the motorcycle, valued at Le38,000, to his own use or benefit. The offence is charged under Section 20(1)(iv)(a) of the Larceny Act of 1916.

George appeared before Magistrate Medissa Massaquio at Pademba Road Court No. 6. No plea was taken, as the matter is proceeding under committal proceedings.

Sub-Inspector Amiza John is leading the prosecution. The magistrate denied George bail, citing the seriousness of the alleged offence, and ordered that he be remanded at the Male Correctional Facility.

The matter was adjourned to 4 November 2026 for further proceedings. George has not been convicted, and the allegation remains before the court.
