Ministry of Agriculture Rolls Out E-Extension Program Across Kenema District

In a bid to modernize advisory services and reach a broader agricultural audience, the Extension Division of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security has launched an innovative E-Extension outreach campaign across Kenema District.

The initiative leverages video technology to deliver standardized, best-practice agricultural guidance simultaneously to large groups of farmers. The initial rollout successfully reached six communities located across three chiefdoms: Blama and Kpai (Small-Bo Chiefdom), Foidu, Hangha, and Combema (Nongowa Chiefdom), and Gofor Dama (Dama Chiefdom).

Addressing community members during the screenings, District Extension Officer Mr. Ibrahim Musa Foday emphasized the critical role of these visual materials, particularly those focusing on Inland Valley Swamp (IVS) management.

“The primary focus of the Ministry of Agriculture is to ensure national food security while helping local farmers improve productivity and profitability,” Mr. Foday stated, urging agricultural workers to adopt recommended techniques to maximize yield.

Despite E-Extension being a novel approach for many rural communities, turnout was exceptionally strong. To ensure clarity and overcome language barriers, field extension staff conducted follow-up discussions in local dialects following each video presentation, allowing farmers to ask questions and discuss key takeaways.

Ministry officials confirmed that the E-Extension program will expand to additional chiefdoms throughout Kenema District in the coming months.
