Mother & daughter in police custody for police officer's mysterious murder

Regarding the mysterious homicide of Superintendent Arnold Adeyemi Coker, a police officer, Kashopeh Smith (mother) and Remi Smith (daughter) have been incarcerated.

Magistrate Santigie Bangura of the Pademba Road Magistrate Court No. 2 in Freetown convened a hearing where the mother and daughter were presented with the allegations.

Murder, perversion of justice, concealment of a felony, and other related charges are being brought against the accused parties. However, they did not enter a plea because they are only undergoing a preliminary investigation before the court.

According to the police report, on Monday, September 2, 2024, at No. 37 Carr Street, Hastings, in Freetown, Kashopeh Smith, the primary accused, is said to have killed Superintendent Coker.

The police report further alleges that Kashopeh Smith, the first accused, knowingly constructed evidence to pervert the course of justice, being fully aware of the circumstances surrounding Superintendent Coker's murder.

After authorities asserted that Remi Smith, the second accused, unlawfully concealed the alleged murder committed by her mother, she was implicated.

Similar to her mother, Remi Smith was accused of fabricating evidence to obstruct the course of justice.

The police prosecutor requested an adjournment after the charges were read, citing the absence of his witnesses.

The lead defense counsel, Claudius Campbell, on the other hand, expressed disappointment over the request, noting that before being charged in court, the accused individuals had already spent a significant amount of time in custody.

He urged the court to conduct a prompt trial.

Magistrate Bangura approved the request following the petition and postponed the hearing until October 31, 2024, for further consideration.

Until the following adjourned date, the accused parties will remain in detention.
