The National Youth Commission, led by Commissioner Ahmed Atata Mansaray, has unveiled a major initiative to empower 8,000 young individuals nationwide by granting each a $300 one-off stipend. This initiative forms part of a robust social safety net designed to fulfill the president's commitment to creating job opportunities for the youth in Sierra Leone.
The $2.4 million grant is aimed at young people aged 18-35 who hold a National ID and either own or intend to start a household business. The funds are scheduled for disbursement in the first or second week of July, contingent upon the completion of requisite documentation. Beneficiaries will be allocated across various towns, including 1,500 recipients in Bo, Kenema, Makeni, and Port Loko, with additional recipients in Freetown.
The Youth Commission is working in close collaboration with the Ministry of Youth to ensure the effective implementation and monitoring of this initiative, alongside various state interventions. This partnership is intended to enhance cooperation with all institutions involved in youth empowerment in Sierra Leone.
Commissioner Mansaray stressed that the commission's focus extends beyond mere financial support. Their aim is to foster a comprehensive approach to youth empowerment, ensuring that young people receive the support they rightfully deserve.
Commissioner Mansaray also highlighted a significant gender gap in empowerment opportunities and reaffirmed the commission's commitment to addressing this issue following the enactment of the Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment Act in 2022. They are striving to align their initiatives with the provisions of this act.
