Nigerian Businessman Admits $9,090 Theft

A 35-year-old Nigerian businessman faces up to ten years in prison if he fails to repay US$9,090 stolen from a Freetown residence, following his guilty plea at the High Court in Sierra Leone.
Terry Obia pleaded guilty to a single count of larceny under Section 13(a) of the Larceny Act of 1916 before Justice Adrian Fisher at High Court No. 1 on Siaka Stevens Street. The charge stems from the theft of US$9,090 (equivalent to Le237,600) from the dwelling house of Paul Osunwa in December 2024.
When questioned by Justice Fisher regarding the whereabouts of the funds, Obia stated that he had invested the money into a mining venture that ultimately collapsed. He informed the court that he had disclosed the loss to Osunwa and requested additional time to source funds for full restitution.
Justice Fisher urged Obia to reach out to his family and relatives for financial assistance prior to the next hearing, cautioning that a failure to reimburse the victim would result in a 10-year custodial sentence.
The matter has been adjourned to October 30, 2026, for further proceedings.
