The Parliamentary Committee on Sports has issued a formal call for accountability, summoning the Ministry of Sports and the National Sports Authority (NSA) to deliver a comprehensive status report on the long-delayed National Stadium rehabilitation project.

The session, held Tuesday, June 23, 2026, at Tower Hill, served as a critical review of the construction project, which has been underway since February 2022.

Committee Chairperson Hon. Racheal Pessima opened the hearing by welcoming the NSA’s new leadership—specifically Executive Director Mohamed Alphaka Conteh Esq.—while emphasizing the urgent need for parliamentary intervention to address the stagnating work.

During the proceedings, NSA Deputy Executive Director Dr. Abdulai Rahman Swaray confirmed that the project has significantly exceeded its projected timeline.

He cited critical gaps in the original project agreement as the primary driver of the ongoing delays.

The extended closure of the facility has severely hampered the nation's capacity to host international events, most notably current FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

In his address to the Committee, Mr. Conteh underscored that completing the stadium demands a synergy of strong political commitment and immediate, pragmatic action.

He outlined a strategic roadmap to break the impasse, proposing key measures including a supplementary budget, increased private sector involvement, and elevated political oversight to ensure the project’s successful conclusion.

The Committee also received a detailed technical briefing on the state of current operations from Alie Sesay, the NSA’s Director of Corporate Operations.

Lawmakers commended the improved collaborative spirit between the Ministry and the NSA, urging both bodies to maintain this alignment to finalize the project, which remains a pivotal asset for Sierra Leone’s sporting infrastructure.
