Political party representatives in Sierra Leone have officially pledged their full support for public participation in the upcoming 2026 Population and Housing Census, highlighting the crucial need for cross-party collaboration ahead of the nationwide initiative.

The commitment was announced during a town hall meeting at the Brookfield Hotel, where political figures Ahmed Saybom Kanu and Leonard Balogun Koroma discussed strategies for driving public awareness for the census, scheduled to take place from December 2 to December 16, 2026.

Drawing on his background with Statistics Sierra Leone, Kanu emphasized that reliable population data serves as the foundation for effective national planning and socio-economic development. He noted that comprehensive statistics enable the government and international development partners to design targeted programs, allocate state resources efficiently, and identify community needs—particularly across remote and underserved regions.

Kanu further underscored the necessity of sustained political backing across party lines to ensure the integrity and smooth execution of the census process.

Echoing these sentiments, Koroma, representing the All People’s Congress (APC), reaffirmed his party’s dedication to grassroots sensitization and mobilization. He pointed out that political leaders play a pivotal role in encouraging civic engagement and fostering public trust in the data collection process.

Both representatives commended Statistics Sierra Leone for its outreach efforts to key community stakeholders, including Paramount Chiefs, traditional leaders, civil society organizations, and local media outlets.

The 2026 census will incorporate modern digital technologies for data collection and processing, aiming to provide high-precision demographic metrics that will guide national policy and resource distribution for years to come.
