To enhance urban order and improve vehicular and pedestrian accessibility, the Sierra Leone Police, specifically the Goderich Division, initiated a coordinated enforcement operation targeting unauthorized constructions within the western area of the capital. The operation, managed by the division's Operations Team, concentrated on the Funkia community, where unapproved structures had significantly encroached upon principal traffic routes.
This exercise is integral to a wider initiative addressing the rapid proliferation of temporary vending stalls and permanent structures erected without requisite official permits on public rights-of-way. These infringements have consistently been identified as primary factors contributing to:
The constriction of major traffic arteries, impeding vehicular flow.
Pedestrian safety risks due to obstructed sidewalks, compelling citizens to utilize the roadway.
Increased vulnerability to localized inundation during periods of seasonal rainfall.
The Operations Team of the Goderich Division executed the procedure in a systematic manner. Although the action elicited varied responses from local commercial operators, authorities underscored the necessity of the measure to uphold established urban planning legislation and guarantee public safety. Funkia, characterized by significant recent informal expansion, is a key commercial area within Goderich.
The clearance aims to effectively reclaim the "Right of Way," thereby ensuring unimpeded access for essential services, including emergency vehicles and public transportation.
City management officials mandate that all residents and proprietors strictly comply with zoning regulations and secure the appropriate permits prior to construction, mitigating potential financial liabilities resulting from subsequent enforcement actions.
