A staggering 1,659 individuals are currently detained in correctional centers across Sierra Leone, following the conclusion of the Judiciary's 2025 Criminal Session.
The official data reveals a significant gender difference, with 1,561 male inmates and 98 female inmates held on charges ranging from minor offenses to serious crimes.
These figures represent the caseload overseen during this annual judicial period, which plays a crucial role in the nation's criminal justice system.
Presiding over the proceedings was Honourable Justice Alhaji Momoh-Jah Stevens of the Court of Appeal, who emphasized the urgent need for prompt and just resolution of cases, particularly for those who have endured lengthy periods on remand.
The Criminal Session serves as a vital mechanism for reducing case backlogs and ensuring the timely delivery of justice. It underscores the Judiciary's commitment to upholding the rule of law and guaranteeing fair trials within reasonable timeframes, as enshrined in Sierra Leone's constitutional guarantees.
This 2025 session holds particular significance as it precedes the full implementation of the new Criminal Procedure Act, 2025.
This forthcoming legislation is expected to introduce sweeping legal reforms aimed at streamlining criminal processes, safeguarding the rights of defendants, and bolstering public confidence in the justice system.
As the 2025 Criminal Session concludes, the Judiciary reiterates its unwavering dedication to administering justice and preserving the integrity of Sierra Leone’s legal framework.
The institution remains steadfast in its mission to support democratic governance, protect human rights, and ensure a transparent, accessible, and accountable justice sector for all citizens.
