Sierra Leone U-16 Basketball Team Heads to FIBA Zone II Tournament

Sierra Leone’s U-16 Male National Basketball Team is set to represent the country at the FIBA U-16 Zone II Tournament, scheduled to take place in Thiès, Senegal, from August 20 to 23, 2026.

The delegation comprises nine young players, Head Coach Issa Fofana, Assistant Coach Reginald Bart-Williams, Statistician Mohamed Woobay, Media Team member Francis Sesay, and Head of Delegation and Secretary General of the Sierra Leone Basketball Federation, Ishmaila Bangura.

The team’s participation has received support from the Sierra Leone Basketball Federation, with additional contributions from Africell, AfriMoney and other individuals and partners supporting the development of basketball in the country.

Sierra Leone will compete against Cape Verde, The Gambia, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Mali, Mauritania and hosts Senegal in what is expected to be a highly competitive regional tournament.

As part of its support for the national team, Africell has provided members of the delegation with SIM cards, free internet access and free calls throughout the tournament, enabling the team to remain connected while representing Sierra Leone in Senegal.

The FIBA U-16 Zone II Tournament provides an important platform for Sierra Leone’s young basketball talents to gain valuable international experience and compete against some of the region’s best players in their age category.

The tournament will also give the players an opportunity to showcase their abilities on the regional stage while flying the Sierra Leonean flag in Thiès.

The young Leone Stars will now look to make a strong impression in the competition and deliver performances that will make the country proud.
