Sierra Leone’s U-17 Women’s National Team is on the verge of making history at the maiden WAFU A U-17 Girls Tournament after securing a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Senegal in Monrovia on Tuesday.
Senegal’s Astou Diouf gave the visitors the lead just before half-time, but Sierra Leone showed remarkable resilience. Ruth Bawoh struck a crucial equalizer three minutes from full-time, keeping the Young Queens in control of their championship ambitions.
The draw sees Sierra Leone top the standings with seven points from three matches, three points clear of Senegal. A draw against hosts Liberia in their final fixture on Thursday will be enough to crown them champions of the inaugural three-nation competition.
Liberia, having suffered two defeats, sit at the bottom of the table and are already out of contention. Sierra Leone had previously beaten Senegal 2-1 in the tournament’s opening round, underlining their consistency and determination throughout the campaign.
With just one match remaining, the Young Queens are just a step away from lifting their first-ever WAFU A U-17 Girls title, a historic achievement for the nation.
