SLCAA Activates Preventive Ebola Protocols at Freetown International Airport

The Sierra Leone Civil Aviation Authority (SLCAA) has announced the immediate implementation of enhanced Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) screening and prevention measures at Freetown International Airport (FIA) following reports of a new Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The move forms part of the country’s proactive efforts to strengthen border health security and prevent the potential cross-border transmission of the deadly virus. Aviation and public health authorities have intensified surveillance measures at the country’s main international gateway to ensure early detection and rapid response to any potential health threats.

In an official public notice, the Director General of the SLCAA, Musayeroh Barrie, emphasized that the heightened protocols are precautionary measures aimed at safeguarding public health while maintaining confidence in Sierra Leone’s aviation sector.

She reassured passengers, airline operators, and airport personnel that the enhanced screening procedures are designed to align with international health and aviation safety standards and do not indicate the presence of Ebola cases in Sierra Leone.

According to the Authority, travelers arriving at and departing from Freetown International Airport should expect increased health monitoring and screening procedures as part of the strengthened preventive framework. The measures are intended to minimize risks while ensuring the continued safe and efficient movement of passengers through the airport.

The SLCAA noted that it is working closely with relevant government agencies and health authorities to monitor developments surrounding the outbreak in the DRC and to implement any additional safeguards deemed necessary by national and international public health bodies.

The announcement comes amid growing concerns across the African continent following the re-emergence of Ebola in the DRC, a country that has previously experienced multiple outbreaks of the disease. Health experts have consistently stressed the importance of vigilance, surveillance, and rapid response mechanisms in preventing the spread of infectious diseases across international borders.

Sierra Leone, which was among the countries hardest hit during the 2014–2016 West African Ebola epidemic, continues to prioritize preparedness and public health security. The outbreak claimed thousands of lives in the country and left lasting impacts on communities and the healthcare system.

By strengthening screening measures at Freetown International Airport, authorities aim to bolster national preparedness, protect travelers and frontline workers, and ensure that Sierra Leone remains vigilant against potential public health threats while maintaining safe international travel operations.
