Statistics Sierra Leone (Stats SL) has initiated a crucial 10-day national training program for field mappers in Kenema, a pivotal step in preparation for the 2026 Population and Housing Census.
This comprehensive training aims to equip mappers from Kenema, Kailahun, and Kono with the necessary skills for the upcoming cartographic mapping exercise, a foundational element for the decennial census.
During his welcoming address, Mr. David Bayon, Regional Manager of Statistics SL East, underscored the paramount importance of the mapping exercise.
He urged participants to approach the training with unwavering focus and dedication, emphasizing that the outcome will directly inform key decisions, including the number of personnel to be recruited, the effectiveness of mapping instruments, and the overall resource allocation for the main census.
Andrew Bob Johnny, Statistician-General and Chief Census Officer, further elaborated on the training's purpose, highlighting its role in building participants' capacity in utilizing modern GIS tools and mapping software.
He reaffirmed Stats SL’s steadfast commitment to conducting an inclusive, transparent, and collaborative census, stressing that the census is fundamentally about the people, and every effort will be made to ensure no one is overlooked. He added that widespread participation hinges on the adequate execution of the mapping exercise.
Mr. Johnny also inspired the mappers by characterizing the training as a unique opportunity for professional advancement and a significant contribution to national development.
The opening session saw the attendance of members of the press, District Managers from Kenema, Kailahun, and Kono, and the training facilitators.
The training itself is being conducted across three venues: Kenema District participants are at Peace Garden Hall, Kono District participants are at the Kenema Youth Centre, and Kailahun District participants are at the newly constructed SLAJ Region Secretariat Hall.
