Tensions Rise in Segbwema Over Alleged Assault Ahead of Paramount Chieftaincy Election

Tensions are reportedly escalating in Segbwema, Daru Division, as the Paramount Chieftaincy election draws closer, following allegations that individuals linked to one of the aspirants assaulted members of the Jajua family.

According to community sources, the incident occurred on Friday, 17 April 2026, and allegedly involved soldiers believed to be associated with aspirant Colonel Musa Gbow. The reported attack has left members of the Jajua family injured and sparked fear among residents, who say the situation reflects rising political and traditional leadership tensions in the area.

Local accounts suggest that the confrontation has intensified anxieties within the community, with concerns growing over the potential for further violence as the chieftaincy contest approaches.

Residents have also expressed frustration over what they describe as a delay by the Sierra Leone Police in launching a full and transparent investigation into the alleged assault. Many community members fear that the absence of swift law enforcement action could undermine public confidence in the justice system and worsen tensions.

While the allegations have not yet been independently verified through official police statements, the incident has triggered widespread concern, particularly given the involvement of individuals reportedly linked to a chieftaincy aspirant.

Across Sierra Leone, concerns about political influence and security challenges during sensitive electoral and traditional leadership processes have previously been raised, with stakeholders often calling for neutrality, accountability, and strengthened law enforcement response.

Community leaders and civil society actors are now urging authorities to urgently investigate the matter, ensure accountability for any wrongdoing, and guarantee the safety of all citizens as the Paramount Chieftaincy election approaches in Segbwema.

“Peaceful elections depend on justice and fairness,” one resident said, calling on authorities to act decisively to prevent further escalation of tensions in the area.
