Traders Raise Alarm Over Escalating Garbage Crisis At Pujehun Central Market

Traders at the Pujehun Central Market are sounding the alarm over a growing pile of uncollected garbage that has been left unattended for an extended period, creating increasingly foul and unhygienic conditions across the bustling commercial hub.

Speaking in an interview with Pujehun Daily News, market trader Agnes Brima revealed that local vendors have made repeated appeals to the Pujehun District Council to address the refuse, but their requests have so far fallen on deaf ears.

According to Brima, waste management officials informed vendors that the council's disposal vehicles are currently grounded due to a lack of fuel. As a result, traders and young children who spend full days at the market are forced to endure an unbearable stench.

The expanding heap has also turned the market into an informal dumping site for surrounding residents. Lamin, a vendor who prepares and sells ground cassava leaves, highlighted the direct impact on food safety, warning that swarms of flies from the decomposing trash are actively contaminating food prepared for customers.

Labeling the situation a major public health emergency, market community members are calling on the Pujehun District Council and relevant health authorities to intervene immediately with waste removal services and long-term sanitation management.
