U-19s Armed with Integrity Briefing Ahead of World Cup Qualifiers

In a critical precursor to their tournament debut, the Sierra Leone Under-19 Men’s Cricket Team attended a comprehensive anti-corruption and integrity briefing conducted by the International Cricket Council (ICC) this Friday. 

The session comes as the squad prepares for the highly anticipated opening of the ICC Under-19 Men’s Cricket World Cup Africa Division 2 Qualifier in Kigali.

The mandatory session, which included players, coaching staff, and management, served as a stern reminder of the ethical standards expected on the international stage. 

Tournament Director Martin Ondeko, representing the ICC Anti-Corruption and Integrity Management Unit, led the discussion, urging the delegation to remain vigilant against the sophisticated tactics used by match-fixing networks.

Ondeko highlighted the deceptive nature of corrupt approaches, warning that bad actors often use the guise of "sponsorship opportunities," "overseas placements," or lucrative gift offers to compromise the sport's integrity. 

"Participants must recognize, reject, and report any suspicious activity," Ondeko emphasized, noting that even support staff are frequently targeted.

The ICC’s directive is clear: any gift exceeding US$750 or any unusual approach must be reported immediately via the ICC Integrity App. Beyond reporting requirements, the Director issued a zero-tolerance warning regarding betting on cricket matches and confirmed strict regulations within the Players, Managers, and Officials Area (PMOA). 

This includes a total ban on mobile phones and electronic devices to prevent unauthorized communication during match windows.

As Sierra Leone prepares to take the field this Sunday, these integrity measures ensure that the focus remains entirely on the talent and fair play of the young athletes. 

The briefing underscores the ICC's commitment to maintaining a transparent and fair environment for the next generation of cricketing stars.
