The 50/50 Group of Sierra Leone has formally appealed to the judiciary for the granting of bail to Zainab Sheriff, who is currently detained on charges of incitement and threatening language.

In a press statement released on March 7, the organization urged the court to reconsider its decision, noting that Ms. Sheriff has been denied bail on three occasions despite her not-guilty plea.

The group affirmed its commitment to responsible public discourse and respect for legal processes, while unequivocally stating that it does not condone actions that violate the rule of law in Sierra Leone. Acknowledging that the matter is currently before the magistrate court, the organization refrained from commenting on the specifics of the ongoing case.

Referencing the "Give to Gain" theme associated with International Women's Day, the organization encouraged the government and the judiciary to demonstrate fairness and collaboration in addressing issues concerning women in leadership and public life.

Specifically, the 50/50 Group called upon key stakeholders, including the Chief Justice and the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, to ensure Ms. Sheriff is granted bail in accordance with Sierra Leonean law. The group cited Section 76(1) of the Criminal Procedure Act No. 8 of 2024, which generally mandates the granting of bail in cases not involving capital offences such as murder, treason, or crimes carrying a maximum life sentence, unless the prosecution presents compelling reasons for refusal.

The organization contended that granting bail would reassure citizens, particularly women aspiring to roles in leadership and governance, of the justice system's fairness and accessibility.

Furthermore, the 50/50 Group of Sierra Leone stated its intention to continue supporting initiatives focused on strengthening advocacy skills for women in politics and governance, concurrently promoting strict adherence to the rule of law.

The organization asserted that such efforts are vital for cultivating responsible leadership and advancing democratic governance within the country.
