56-Year-Old Charged Over Stolen Cash and Valuables at Ministry

A prosecution witness delivered key testimony in court regarding the theft of a significant sum of money and high-value personal belongings from the Ministry of Lands, Housing, and Country Planning, leading to the remand of the accused.

The witness, Hossam Magdy, testified before Magistrate Mustapha Brima Jah, detailing the events of August 12, 2026. Magdy reported attending an official appointment at the ministry’s headquarters in the Youyi Building, located in Brookfields, Freetown, where the incident took place.

According to his statement, Magdy inadvertently left a black cross-body bag unattended in the reception waiting area while meeting with the minister. The bag reportedly contained $20,000 in cash, wireless ear pods valued at NLe 8,000, and perfume valued at NLe 500.

The total value of the stolen property is estimated at NLe 487,300. The defendant, 56-year-old Mohamed Ansumana Dabeneh, faces charges of larceny in connection with the incident. Dabeneh formally pleaded not guilty during his appearance.

Lead prosecutor Assistant Commissioner Juan M.S. Bull Esq. emphasized the gravity of the offense, underscoring the severity of a security breach and alleged theft inside a public government establishment. Citing the weight of the allegations, Magistrate Jah denied bail and ordered Dabeneh remanded in custody pending the next hearing on September 18, 2026.

The proceedings have drawn attention to security protocols within government premises, with observers noting the critical need for heightened surveillance and safeguards to protect visitors and state infrastructure.
