61-year-old Nurse Fined for Riotous Conduct

A 61-year-old nurse, Jaka Kakay, was fined Le1,500 on Monday after pleading guilty to three counts of riotous conduct at Freetown's Pademba Road Magistrate Court No. 2.

Presided over by Magistrate John Manso Fofanah, the case involves Kakay and five co-accused—Abdulai Kargbo, Sakceleb Suluku, Alpha Seray, Tejan Magao, and Osman Kamara—who are collectively facing four charges, including conspiracy, riotous conduct, incitement, and malicious damage.

According to court records, the charges stem from an incident on 18 March 2026, at Vai S.S. Camp, Regent Village, Freetown. Kakay was accused of conspiring with others to engage in riotous behavior and inciting fellow accused persons. Additionally, Suluku, Seray, Magao, and Kamara face a charge for the malicious damage of a mobile phone valued at Le6,000, which belonged to Genevieve Caulker.

During the proceedings, Kakay’s defense counsel presented a written plea of guilty for the first three counts, noting that her client was outside the jurisdiction at the time. Acknowledging Kakay’s status as a first-time offender and citing her age and health conditions, the defense urged the court to grant leniency.

Magistrate Fofanah sentenced Kakay to pay a total fine of Le1,500—Le500 for each count. The fine must be paid immediately; otherwise, the accused faces a potential six-month prison sentence, with two months for each count to be served consecutively upon her return to the jurisdiction.

The trial is set to resume on 20 July 2026, when the prosecution is scheduled to present testimony from Witness Two (PW2).
