SLPP Consults Elders on Former President Koroma's Potential Return

On 13 July 2026, the Sierra Leone People's Party (SLPP) convened high-level internal talks with senior party elders to discuss developments surrounding former President Ernest Bai Koroma, framing the consultation as a strategic push for national unity and constitutional adherence.

SLPP National Chairman Sir Jimmy Batilo Songa, alongside Deputy National Chairman Robert K. Kargbo, met with the National Elders Council—designated under the party's 2020 Constitution as its moral guarantors—to brief them on recent engagements with parliamentary leadership and party leader, President Julius Maada Bio.

The discussions centered on ensuring that any government or parliamentary actions regarding the former president remain strictly aligned with the Constitution of Sierra Leone. Chairman Songa emphasized that the party is committed to safeguarding democratic governance and upholding regional obligations, specifically referencing the ECOWAS Revised Treaty and the Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance, which advocate for the peaceful resolution of political differences.

According to party leadership, the move is consistent with President Bio’s long-standing focus on reconciliation and national cohesion, a commitment dating back to his involvement in ending the nation's civil war. The party aims to frame ongoing initiatives through the lens of promoting long-term stability and inclusive national dialogue.
