Civic activist Edmond Abu has formally called upon the Political Parties Registration Commission (PPRC) to review recent public statements made by President Julius Maada Bio in Bonthe.

The remarks, delivered in Mende, were interpreted by various media outlets as inflammatory toward opposition supporters. Critics argue that the phrasing suggested severe consequences for political dissent, raising significant concerns regarding public safety and democratic discourse.

In an interview with Liberty Online TV, Mr. Abu characterized the President's comments as highly inappropriate for a national leader. While government representatives have sought to frame the rhetoric as humorous, Abu maintained that such language carries profound historical weight and potential consequences.

He emphasized that the President has a fundamental responsibility to exercise discretion and maintain a unifying tone when addressing the citizenry.

Mr. Abu further asserted that because these statements were made within a partisan political context rather than an official state function, the PPRC maintains the jurisdiction to intervene.

He recommended that the Commission issue a formal reprimand and consider statutory fines to ensure future compliance with political conduct standards. He underscored that leadership requires constant mindfulness of how public messaging impacts national stability.

Concluding his statement, the activist reiterated that executive communication should prioritize constructive dialogue over provocative rhetoric.

He noted that the widespread misunderstanding and subsequent backlash following the Bonthe address serve as a clear indication of the need for more disciplined public engagement from the nation's highest office.
