On World Water Day, March 22, 2026, the African Union (AU) formally inaugurated its annual theme: "Assuring Sustainable Water Availability and Safe Sanitation Systems to Achieve the Goals of Agenda 2063."

During a high-level symposium, the AU Commission officially reclassified water security, shifting its perception from a purely environmental issue to a "continental political priority." This strategic declaration is highly relevant to Sierra Leone, given its ongoing, intensive implementation of the NWRMA Strategic Development Plan (2026–2030).

The accompanying global sub-theme, "Water and Gender," highlights the disproportionate burden of water collection borne by women and girls. In response, the AU has issued a directive advocating for "gender responsive water investments" across member states.

Locally, the Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation in Freetown recently advanced the Angola Town Water Supply Project by transferring necessary land titles, an initiative that directly supports the AU's continental strategy emphasizing decentralized sanitation solutions.

Furthermore, the AU's new roadmap is designed to leverage substantial international financing to aid member states in developing robust, climate-resilient water infrastructure, thereby mitigating the intensifying effects of drought observed across the West African region.
