Aki-Sawyerr Welcomes Koroma's Return as a Boost for Sierra Leone

Freetown Mayor Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr has hailed the return of former President Ernest Bai Koroma to Sierra Leone as a landmark moment for both the All People’s Congress (APC) and the nation, emphasizing the value of his statesmanship and guidance.

Speaking after Koroma’s arrival on Sunday, Aki-Sawyerr noted that having a former Head of State back home offers priceless experience and leadership. 

“When you get a former Head of State, it’s really beneficial for the country,”

she stated, describing his presence as a source of inspiration and national direction.

Aki-Sawyerr confirmed that while Koroma will not handle day-to-day APC operations, his legacy and insights remain vital. 

"The role former President Ernest Bai Koroma plays in the APC is a role history will not erase,"

she said, adding that party members and young citizens alike will continue to draw on his wisdom.

Koroma returned from Nigeria alongside high-profile dignitaries, including former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo and Foreign Minister Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu. His return follows the dismissal of criminal proceedings against him in July 2026.

Expressing joy at being “back home,” Koroma pledged to champion peace, foster national cohesion, and mentor Sierra Leone’s youth as the country looks toward a unified future.
