Ambassador Sadiq Sillah Steps In to Assist Sierra Leonean Stranded in Egypt
Sierra Leone’s Ambassador to Egypt, Amb. Sadiq Sillah, has been commended for intervening in the case of Baindu Francis, a Sierra Leonean national reportedly seeking assistance to return home after encountering difficulties in Egypt.
According to people close to the matter, Baindu travelled to Egypt after her friend, Fatmata Sillah, reportedly facilitated her journey and paid the travel expenses, with an agreement that Baindu would repay the money through employment in Egypt. However, Baindu reportedly struggled to secure work and was unable to repay the expenses, which she said amounted to approximately Le50,000.
It is further alleged that Fatmata retained Baindu’s passport over the outstanding amount, leaving her in a vulnerable situation and unable to freely arrange her return to Sierra Leone. The circumstances have raised concerns about possible exploitation and alleged human trafficking, although the full facts and legal status of the matter remain subject to investigation.
Following an appeal for assistance, Foreign Affairs Minister Hon. Mohamed Rahman Swarray reportedly helped facilitate communication with the Sierra Leonean Embassy in Egypt. Ambassador Sillah subsequently intervened, with efforts focused on Baindu’s safety, the concerns surrounding her passport, and facilitating a possible return to Sierra Leone.
The intervention has been welcomed, while the case has also highlighted the need for Sierra Leoneans seeking overseas employment to verify job offers, understand financial obligations, and ensure their travel and employment arrangements comply with relevant laws.
