Anti-Drug Campaigners Honoured as Sierra Leone Marks World Drug Day

A local drug prevention and community empowerment initiative has been honoured by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for its efforts in combating substance abuse, promoting awareness, and advancing evidence-based drug prevention in Sierra Leone.

The recognition was presented during activities marking World Drug Day, an annual global event aimed at raising awareness about drug abuse and illicit trafficking under the guidance of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).

Organisers described the award as a shared achievement for young people, women, and communities involved in prevention efforts, reaffirming their commitment to public education, youth empowerment, and advocacy for stronger drug prevention policies.

They also acknowledged support from FORUT, a Norwegian partner supporting substance abuse prevention and public health programmes.

Drug abuse remains a growing concern in Sierra Leone, especially among young people, with the increasing spread of substances such as “kush,” alcohol, and other narcotics. Health experts warn that substance abuse contributes to mental health challenges, school dropouts, unemployment, and increased social vulnerability.

The NDLEA has intensified enforcement operations, public awareness campaigns, and community outreach, stressing that stronger collaboration with civil society and development partners is essential to addressing the root causes of drug abuse and building healthier communities.
