Calm Returns to Kailahun Following Fatal Unrest and Arson Attacks

Stability is gradually being restored to Kailahun Township following a wave of violent unrest that began on Sunday, June 21, 2026. The disturbances, which left one man deceased and resulted in the burning of police facilities, have prompted a high-level security response and a comprehensive criminal investigation.

The crisis originated from a reported burglary at approximately 1:30 p.m. in the Gbanyawallu Section. Police Constable Kabba M.S. and Detective Jusu P.B. responded to the scene after receiving a distress call from a local resident. By the time officers arrived, the suspect had fled toward the Kailahun Library area, where he was subsequently apprehended by a large group of civilians.

The suspect, identified as Abdulai Kallon of Daru Town, died during the encounter under circumstances currently being scrutinized by investigators. News of Mr. Kallon's death triggered immediate outrage, particularly within the Kailahun District Bike Riders Union, of which the deceased was a member.

Union Chairman Saidu Daboh stated that eyewitness accounts from members alleged police involvement in the mob violence against Mr. Kallon. These claims intensified local tensions, leading to a mobilization of youths and bike riders who targeted the Kailahun Police Station. 

While Operations Support Unit (OSU) personnel utilized tear gas to defend the station, a police barracks on Pendembu Road was successfully set ablaze, causing extensive structural damage.

Regional Police Commander East, Assistant Commissioner Joe Kamanda Bongay, assumed command of the regional response to restore order. Under the supervision of Regional Crime Officer ASP Mohamed Hindolo Feika, forensic teams have processed the affected sites, documenting crime scenes and recovering physical evidence.

The remains of the deceased were initially examined at the Kailahun Government Hospital before being interred at the Gbaima Kobohun Village Cemetery. Authorities noted the grave is marked to facilitate potential exhumation for further forensic analysis as the investigation proceeds.

In an effort to de-escalate the situation, a summit was convened at the Kailahun District Council Hall, chaired by the Resident Minister East. The meeting included the ONS District Security Coordinator and the National President of the Bike Riders Union. Stakeholders issued a joint call for restraint, emphasizing that justice would be sought through legal channels rather than further violence.

Police officials have confirmed that the investigation has intensified, with statements taken from six witnesses and seven complainants. Currently, twenty-five individuals are in custody at the Kenema Police Station. This group includes twenty-two civilians suspected of involvement in the arson attacks and three individuals—including two police officers—being held in connection with the murder of Mr. Kallon.

As of 23rd June, normalcy has returned to the township. Businesses have reopened and public movement is unrestricted. While a heightened security presence remains, authorities assure the public that the situation is under control as they work toward a final resolution of the case.
