The All People’s Congress (APC) has formally initiated high-level, direct negotiations with the Government of Sierra Leone. This development is regarded as a significant milestone toward resolving the nation’s current political impasse. The discussions, conducted by Vice President Dr. Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh and the senior leadership of the APC, are currently being monitored by International Moral Guarantors.
It has been reported that the dialogue is focused on three primary pillars designed to stabilize the democratic framework of the country:
Implementation of the National Unity Agreement: This involves an assessment of the progress made regarding the peace accord established after the 2023 elections.
Tripartite Committee Recommendations: This includes a review of technical proposals intended to reform the national electoral systems.
Electoral Commission Oversight: This pillar addresses the appointment of Chief Electoral Commissioner Edmond Sylvester Alpha and seeks to ensure future transparency.
While there have been prior criticisms concerning the speed of reform, the APC has characterized the most recent round of dialogue as "encouraging."
The party further observed that the participation of international observers—representing ECOWAS, the African Union, and the United Nations—has introduced an essential level of accountability. Consequently, all parties involved have agreed to convene specialized working groups to address technical and contentious matters.
The APC has committed to maintaining transparency with its constituents, stating that regular updates will be provided to members and supporters as the negotiations continue.
The reported "encouraging progress" suggests a period of diplomatic de-escalation within the current political environment.
