APC Reschedules Constituency Elections Over ECOWAS Summit Security Concerns

The All Peoples Congress (APC) has officially rescheduled its nationwide constituency elections, moving the date from Saturday, July 18, 2026, to Saturday, July 25, 2026. The decision follows official guidance regarding heightened security and logistical requirements for Sierra Leone’s hosting of the high-profile ECOWAS Summit.

The National Secretariat of the APC confirmed that the postponement was finalized following a high-level consultative meeting held on Monday, July 13, 2026. The deliberations involved the leadership of the APC, the Office of National Security (ONS), and the Political Parties Regulation Commission (PPRC).

Security officials from the ONS advised that conducting simultaneous nationwide party elections during the regional summit would overextend national security forces and essential logistical resources. The ONS recommended the one-week delay to ensure public order and the successful execution of the diplomatic event.

“In the interest of national security, public order, and responsible democratic engagement, the National Secretariat has accepted this request,” the APC stated. The party emphasized that the rescheduling was a direct response to a formal request from the state security apparatus rather than any internal organizational challenges.

The party leadership expressed regret for the disruption caused to members, delegates, and aspirants who had finalized preparations for the original July 18 date. The National Secretariat has appealed for calm and unity, urging members to remain disciplined as the country prioritizes national peace during the ECOWAS proceedings.

Despite the adjustment to the timeline, the APC reaffirmed its commitment to conducting a free, fair, and transparent electoral process. The constituency elections are now set to commence across the country on July 25.
