The Benevolent Islamic Secondary School in Makeni was devastated by a fire on Thursday, August 7, 2025, destroying six classrooms, the principal’s office, and the examinations office.
The cause of the blaze remains undetermined, as authorities continue their investigation.
Minister of Basic and Senior Secondary Education, Conrad Sackey, visited the school on Saturday, August 9, accompanied by Deputy Minister I Emily Kadiatu Gogra and other officials.
They were joined by local leaders, including the Chairman of the Bombali District Council, Dr. Mohamed Mark Baba Sesay, and Regent Chief Foday Conteh.
Principal Abdul Salam Conteh firmly refuted social media rumors suggesting the fire was caused by disgruntled pupils. He emphasized that the school had smoothly distributed report cards and exam scripts on the day of the incident, adhering to its policy of transparency.
The school has been grappling with land encroachment issues, and the principal expressed a desire not to prejudice the ongoing investigation.
Significant losses include critical documents such as past pupils’ results, land certificates, and other records, along with numerous computers and office equipment.
Makeni’s Local Unit Commander, CSP Abu Bakaar Magona, assured stakeholders of a thorough and professional investigation.
He confirmed that official statements have been taken from individuals, and updates will be provided.
The destroyed building, constructed in 1977 by local women traders, was confirmed to have no electrical fault, and ongoing construction works were noted nearby.
The swift response of the Sierra Leone Fire Force prevented further damage.
