Basita Michael Defends Liberty TV Presenters

Lawyer Basita Michael has publicly backed Liberty TV presenters Khadija Bangura and Mabel Kabba, warning against attempts to judge independent media voices by their perceived political affiliations. In a direct message to the two presenters, Michael stated that efforts to associate critical voices with political interests are a recurring tactic used to avoid accountability and deflect legitimate criticism.
She noted that their work has earned widespread recognition across the political spectrum for creating a vital platform where citizens can engage with issues of national importance.
“Many Sierra Leoneans, across the political spectrum, see you,”
Michael said, acknowledging both their professional achievements and the courage required to maintain journalistic integrity. Expressing pride in journalists committed to providing space for diverse opinions, she emphasized the essential role of independent media in asking difficult questions and holding public officials accountable.
Michael's support comes amid ongoing controversy following comments made by SLPP National Publicity Secretary Moses Sellu Mambu during an October 19 appearance on Liberty TV's Online Breakfast Show. During the broadcast, Mambu accused the two female journalists, AYV journalist Victor Jones, along with journalist Thomas Dixon of pursuing a political agenda against the ruling party and alleged that Jones, submitted a false report against him to the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ).
Following a formal complaint by Jones, SLAJ issued a statement on October 28 confirming that its records contained no evidence of any false report.
Michael's intervention adds significant weight to broader national discussions regarding the political pressures faced by journalists and the necessity of safeguarding platforms where public issues can be openly debated.
