Trevor Young, CEO of the initiative "Sierra Leone to the Top," has spearheaded a daily cleanup team dedicated to revitalizing the Lumley-Aberdeen beach. This effort, which began in November of the previous year, is driven by a mission to transform the heavily polluted area into a clean, safe, and sustainable asset for both the local community and tourists.
Mr. Young initially conceived the cleanup as a modest exercise but quickly recognized the monumental nature of the task. This realization prompted the development of a sustainable, long-term daily system.
The initiative has successfully garnered cooperation from all local beach bars and establishments, ensuring beachfront cleanliness is a shared responsibility.
While daily cleanups, recycling, and community awareness campaigns continue as short-term priorities, Mr. Young emphasizes the critical long-term need for a citywide, sustainable waste management system, comprehensive environmental education, and stronger anti-dumping policies.
He identifies limited funding as the current primary challenge but remains steadfast in his conviction that persistence will foster a national commitment to a cleaner environment, ultimately creating lasting change for Sierra Leone.
