Following a successful week attending the Commonwealth Magistrates and Judges’ Association (CMJA) Conference in Banjul, The Gambia, Sierra Leone’s Chief Justice, His Lordship Justice Komba Kamanda, received a rousing welcome from fellow Judges, Magistrates, and Judicial staff. The warm reception was in recognition of his continued leadership and the ongoing reforms within the Judiciary of Sierra Leone.

The Chief Justice and his delegation arrived at Freetown International Airport and were immediately escorted in a motorcade to the Freetown Central Mosque on Wilberforce Street. This ceremonial journey formed part of the Assize Service (Judicial Thanksgiving), marking the official opening of the 2025/2026 Judicial Year.

While in The Gambia, Sierra Leone’s Supreme Court Judge, Honourable Justice Fatmatta Bintu Alhadi, was overwhelmingly elected as the Gender Representative for West Africa to the Commonwealth Magistrates and Judges’ Association (CMJA). This election marks a significant milestone for Sierra Leone on the international legal stage and reflects the continued progress of the Chief Justice’s policy on gender equality and empowerment within the Judiciary.

In addition to this  international role, Justice Alhadi was recently appointed Chairperson of the General Legal Council (GLC) by the Honourable Chief Justice. The GLC plays a critical role in regulating the conduct and professionalism of legal practitioners across the country.
