Chinese Ambassador Visits IGP Sellu, Reaffirms Strong China–Sierra Leone Ties

The Chinese Ambassador to Sierra Leone, His Excellency Zhao Yong, on Thursday, 12 March 2026, paid a courtesy visit to the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr. William Fayia Sellu, at Police Headquarters in Freetown, reaffirming the long-standing diplomatic and developmental partnership between China and Sierra Leone.

During the visit, Ambassador Zhao expressed admiration for Sierra Leone’s ongoing social, economic, and security progress. He highlighted the strong trade and investment ties between the two nations, describing them as a foundation for sustained bilateral cooperation.

“As nations with shared goals of growth and development, China and Sierra Leone continue to enjoy a cordial and mutually beneficial relationship,” Ambassador Zhao said.

The Ambassador also drew attention to several key Chinese-supported projects across the country, including the construction of the fish harbour at Black Johnson, the rehabilitation of the National Stadium, the ongoing upgrade of the China–Sierra Leone Friendship Hospital at Jui, and the ambitious Smart City project. He noted that these initiatives not only strengthen infrastructure but also create opportunities for economic growth and improved livelihoods.

Highlighting the Embassy’s commitment to fostering peace and cooperation, Ambassador Zhao said one of its mandates is to advise Chinese nationals in Sierra Leone to remain law-abiding, respectful of local culture and values, and to contribute positively to the country’s development.

IGP Sellu thanked the Ambassador for the visit and reaffirmed the enduring partnership between Sierra Leone and China. He pointed to the Police Headquarters on George Street originally constructed with Chinese support and currently undergoing refurbishment as a symbol of the countries’ close collaboration.

The IGP also highlighted the establishment of a special desk at the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) to serve as a liaison office between Chinese investors and the Chinese Embassy, demonstrating the Sierra Leone Police’s commitment to supporting investment and cooperation with foreign partners.

“The relationship between Sierra Leone and China is built on trust, mutual respect, and shared development goals,” IGP Sellu said.

The courtesy visit concluded with Ambassador Zhao assuring the Inspector General of the Embassy’s continued support and cooperation with the Sierra Leone Police.
