The Ministry of Information and Civic Education organized a Civic Day Series at the Port Loko District Council Hall.
The inaugural event included a quiz and debate competition aimed at evaluating students' knowledge of civic education and fostering patriotism and nationalism by addressing national and local issues.
Six students, consisting of three boys and three girls from six prominent secondary schools, participated equally in the competition.
The participating schools were Dr. Kadie A. Sesay Government Girls Secondary School, Catholic Junior Secondary School, Port Loko, Movement of Faith Junior Secondary School, Maforkie Agricultural Islamic Secondary School, Johanna Kuyvenhoven Model Secondary School, and Free Pentecostal Academy.
The quiz session focused on Sierra Leone's cultural heritage and historical background. After three challenging rounds, Catholic Junior Secondary School, Port Loko, achieved first place with 18 points, followed by Johanna Kuyvenhoven Model Secondary School in second place with 14 points.
The subsequent debate competition involved the same schools discussing significant topics such as the use of social media, anti-corruption initiatives, and the significance of the national census.
An elimination round culminated in a final debate on the topic: "Is Port Loko a pivotal contributor to civic education?" Patient B.S. Turay from Dr. Kadie A. Sesay Government Girls Secondary School won the debate, with Alfred S. Sesay from Johanna Kuyvenhoven Model Secondary School securing second place.
Winners of both the quiz and debate received monetary prizes and personalized educational materials.
The Civic Day Series will continue with a town hall meeting featuring various ministers and representatives from Ministries, Departments, and Agencies.
